A child who experiences a seizure will likely be taken to his or her pediatrician first for a complete physical. The pediatrician will likely refer the child to a pediatric epileptologist, who is a neurologist specializing in epilepsy in children, for an evaluation. The best place to be evaluated is at a major center for pediatric epilepsy, where a full range of treatment options are available. The Weill Cornell Medicine Comprehensive Pediatric Epilepsy Center is nationally known for its comprehensive treatment and ground-breaking research into epilepsy in children.

At the Weill Cornell Medicine Brain and Spine Center, children who are candidates for epilepsy surgery may be evaluated by pediatric neurological surgeon Caitlin Hoffman, M.D., and Dr. Theodore Schwartz, who is internationally known for his expertise in epilepsy surgery and his pioneering research in the field of epilepsy mapping and treatment. Caitlin Hoffman, M.D., is a board-certified neurosurgeon who specializes in pediatric neurosurgery as well as in adult and pediatric epilepsy surgery. She has completed fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery with a focus on surgical epilepsy, and has performed extensive research on the molecular mechanisms of progression of brain tumors, specifically medulloblastoma. Dr. Hoffman is a member of the Weill Cornell Laser Surgery Program and is specially trained in new laser surgery techniques for epilepsy. More about Dr. Hoffman
